Jen (Dual-career mom of Jacob 6, Caleb 3, and Abigail 6 weeks): It’s that time of year again. My one day for breakfast in bed, being doted on, showered with appreciation, and an all house effort of relieving the pressures of being “Mom.”

Kelli (Stay-at-home mom of Logan 9, and Whitney 8): Kids can’t wait for Christmas – Moms can’t wait for Mother’s Day.

Jen: I appreciate the gesture and all, but are you with me that motherhood is so much bigger than a one day celebration can highlight?

Kelli: Definitely. Because when the curtain comes down and the show is over, everyone goes back to their regularly scheduled programming and we mothers go back to being the undiscovered talent waiting for our big break.

Jen: It is the everyday toil and rewards of motherhood that just can’t be captured with a card and some burnt toast.

Kelli: Something special only other mothers truly understand once the spotlight is off and the glory unheralded.

Jen: It’s what being a mother means. It’s having to put someone else ahead of you - but not minding that you have to do it.

Kelli: Being a mother means…even when every cell of your body is screaming for more sleep, you will still rouse your exhausted body to tend to the cries of your child.

Jen: Being a mother means....having a freakish need to make everything homemade and organic in order to give your child the best possible start in life, even though you turned out just fine on formula and canned baby food.

Kelli: Being a mother means...finally understanding why Mom made you eat brussel sprouts and lima beans.

Jen: Being a mother means…realizing that you are supposed to know what to do even when you have no idea.

Kelli: Being a mother means…teaching your children to become independent when all you really want to do is never let them go.

Jen: Being a mother means…thinking nothing of carrying around full sets of clothing changes for your entire family because you know there will be an inevitable accident of some sort.

Kelli: Being a mother means…believing your child is indeed the most beautiful, smartest, sweetest and talented child in the world.

Jen: Being a mother means...realizing your life before being a parent is vastly different and what was important before may not be important at all now.

Kelli: Being a mother means…never again wondering what the meaning of life is.

Jen: Being a mother means...you will joke about having "placenta brain" but it will actually be very true and many times you will ask yourself if you are going crazy because you literally can't remember something.

Kelli: Being a mother means…accepting that the phrase “Because I said so!” is a legitimate parenting technique.

Jen: Being a mother means…not living your life through your child but letting them become their own person.

Kelli: Being a mother means…your last three wishes would be for the health, happiness and safety of your child.

Jen: Being a mother means...having saggy "girls" and a tummy that looks like crepe paper.

Kelli: Being a mother means…there’s nothing like a homemade Mother’s Day card that uses all your tape and loses your scissors.

Kelli Wheeler is a Sacramento stay-at-home mom of two who thinks a close runner up to being a mother is being a father.

Jen Hall is a Sacramento dual-career mom of three who cherishes the responsibility of raising three little persons and the magnitude of having their lives in her hands.
