I know what you mean about not knowing why she's crying. She could be gassy, tired, hungry or just need to be cuddled!
My daughter is now 8 1/2 months old. The first 4 months were the most challenging. I would always make sure to sleep when she slept. The nights will get better with time, for example sleeping a 6 hour stretch opposed to a 1 1/2 hour stretch.
Our baby still wakes up crying in the middle of the night and my new thing is to try and sooth her by holding her close and telling her "it's ok". Rarely that does the trick to get her back to sleep, so I end up having to nurse her back to sleep which only takes about 5 minutes or so. Then I sneak her over to the changing table and change her diaper while she sleeps and then put her down.
