To Text or Not to Text - Full Moons and Safety Glass - AmandaS's Blog - SacMomsClub.com

A while back I saw something that stopped me in my tracks. Well, stopped me in my heels, anyway (I was picking up a pizza for dinner after work).

Leaning against a car was a guy who looked about 20 years old. Leaning against him was a girl who looked about 15. They were, unceremoniously, sucking face in front of Round Table Pizza. I always get irritated when I see older guys with young girls, but the lovely display of affection wasn’t what stopped me.

Nope.

What stopped me was the fact that the erstwhile suck-a-thon took place while the girl, eyes wide open, texted on her mobile phone.

Give me a break.

Now I know that I am pathetically in my mid-30s and that I wouldn’t know a twitter from a twatter but…really? Really, she had so much to say to whomever was on the other end of that text that she had to fanatically text while she was, um, otherwise engaged?

Yikes. I must be old.

I thought it was bad enough about five years ago when I started hearing people in public restrooms talking on their mobile phones. But I think the texting thing has gotten totally out of control. For the longest time the only texts I ever got were messages from my mobile phone company telling me to check my account balance.

I realize that I am a hold out. Most of the other directors (and staff, for that matter) at my work have a Blackberry or Treo. Not me. I use my phone as a…drumroll…phone.

On the rare occasion that I text anyone, it is usually during a painfully long meeting with 30 or more attendants. After about hour three my sister, who lives in Denver, can usually expect a cryptic message from me that says something like “I can see your booty”.

I have, proudly, resisted this current form of communication. How in communication with the world do I really need to be, anyway? I have about six email accounts, a myspace page that I never use, a mobile phone.

But, truth be told, when I needed to get in touch with my 19-year-old babysitter about watching the girls next weekend…I texted her.

Rats.

Wow! Texting while making out? All I can think is that guy must have been a really bad kisser. Cause when it's right, your fingers don't work well enough to hit those tiny buttons. Hahaha.
I know what you mean. I commented yesterday at Fathers Day lunch that every teen in the resteraunt had their cell phone out and were texting. It's a generational thing I think. It takes my Soooo long to get a text out that the only time I do it is to get a hold of my son. It does work! I hate it though.

I text back and forth with my teenage daughter pretty frequently. It's a great way to keep communication open with her. It's also been useful during evening board meetings when she was home alone. We can keep in touch quietly and discreetly.

I am amazed (maybe supremely annoyed is a better way to describe it) at how much young people THINK they need to text. They really think because they have an unlimited text plan on their phone that that means they should express every stupid thought in their head.

I also struggle to text efficiently. I'll often be mid-way through a text, get frustrated, stop, and call the person I'm texting.

And for the record, if you aren't using your hands while you're making out, you aren't doing it right. :)

OK, That is the worst case of texting addiction I have ever heard! But just so you know, I'm with you - A hold out. I think I have initiated exactly two text messages, ever. LOL! I just don't find the need.

But, I think it is a mom thing, not necessarily an over-30-something thing. I'm totally caught up in the 5 yr old crowd stuff. I hope when my kids are teens that I will be doing whatever is 'in' then to connect with them.

I remember thinking how cool it was that my mom was in her 20's during the 60's. I asked her about all that was happening in the world. I asked her what her favorite music was (there was Elvis and the Beatles and soooo much more). Her answer was, "who had time for all that stuff, I had three kids in three years and was busy moving them around the country as a military wife - I have no idea about the current events of that time." Huh. I didn't really get how that disconnect could happen until my own motherhood when my world shrank down to wiggles, disney and playdough - x3.
