How to get washboard abs, the infant way

My son is still discovering the amazing power of his limbs. He is frequently flapping his arms and kicking his legs with such vigor that I’m sure he’s going to take off. When he’s not doing that, he’s gazing curiously at his fingers, those chunky digits, before he pops them into his mouth like chocolate bonbons. Such is the life of a five month old.

This weekend, we put him down underneath his activity gym, a colorful contraption with bells, stuffed toys and rings, and his workout began. With his back flat on the mat, he kicked his legs high until they were perpendicular with the floor. Then he let them go and before they reached the floor again – back up, up into the air.  He did it again and again. Up then down. Up then down.

“Look at that,” my husband said. “That’s hard to do, you know…”

I situated myself down next to him and began copying his moves. Up then down. Up then down. These were killer crunches. Within a few minutes, I was out of breath but baby continued on, quite happily, only glancing temporarily at the panting pile next to him.

The next morning, I was sore. Baby was fine. Denise Austin best watch her back. He could make a workout video that would give her a run for her money.
