The Big Blue Bus - Bicycling with the Twins
Bicycling with the twins on the Big Blue Bus, our name for our tandem bicycle, has become a favorite family adventure we look forward to each weekend.  My husband is the captain.  I'm the stoker, and the twins are the passengers.   My husband and I were avid cyclists before having our twins, so it seems natural to bring them along on rides in their bike trailer.  In order to keep the kids safe and securely fastened in their seats, we use Kiddopotamus fleece inserts.  Their bike trailer has a built in cover the protects them from various weather conditions.

We ride on the American River bike trail.  Our favorite section of trail is between Watt Avenue and Beals Pointe.   Not only is the bike trail beautiful, but there is virtually no vehicle traffic, with the exception of where the trail crosses park entrances.

The first few rides with the kids, were about an hour in length.  They slept the entire time.  Every other ride, we have gradually increased the length.  This last Saturday, we rode for 2 1/2 hours, just over 31 miles.  The kids did great!  They slept most of the time.  And, even when they were awake, they did not cry.  We had so much fun on Saturday, we rode again on Monday, President's Day.

We are looking forward to the longer days and warmer temperatures of Spring.  We'll be able to ride farther and longer.   Some features of our upcoming rides will include stops in Fair Oaks at the Sunflower Drive-in, Gold River at Jamba Juice or Starbucks Coffee, and Beals Pointe for a picnic before heading back home.

Send me an e-mail If any of you are interested in joining us on our rides.  Feel free to view the three photos I attached to this post.

WOW! 2 1/2 hours. That's most impressive. No wonder you look so great after having twins. I love the pictures (and new profile pic). Your caravan does indeed look like a big blue bus. We see a lot of families like yours (living in Davis). A "tractor trailer train" of family bikes. Before you know it the kids will be tagging along with you guys on their own bikes. You may have the next generation of Lance Armstrong behind you in that trailer.

I'm glad you had a good weekend and a great bike ride.

I'm taking my bike in for a tune-up and new tires today. I want to ride more. I have a classic 1950's coaster style. Davis is flat, so I don't need gears. I'm more a country Sunday rider with a flowers and bread sitcking out of my basket than a "go-get-em" rider like you guys are.

That is so cool! Whenever I need motivation to get a workout in, I'll think of you!

Great to see that you are making it a family affair!! We had a burley carrier and a tandem back in Chicago when my son's we're 6 months and 2 1/2 and we used do allot of organized rides.  Since we moved back to Roseville, California my two boys now 11 and 13 still ride.  I ride at the trail but mostly out hear in Roseville on the road and just started to take out my friend with her two small children in a Burley.  If you ever ride on Wednesday mornings @ 10:00 a.m., we meet at Sharp Bicycles for a 17 mile ride to Lincoln and also on Sunday's at 11:00 a.m.  I may join you guys on the trail sometime also.

Happy riding.
