Mama, what's this?

I was getting ready for work yesterday morning and I had a few things on the bathroom counter; toothpaste, mascara, lotion. Nothing out of the ordinary. But something in particular caught my preschoolers eye.  I was busy looking at myself in the mirror when he picked up something and asked, "Mama, what's this? What's this for Mama?".

At first I tried to ignore the question thinking he would get distracted by something else. But that wasn't the case.

"Mama, what's this for?"

"Oh, that?! That is.......ummmm. That's.....hmmmmm." I didn't have an answer, at least one that I wanted to share with him. I decided to just take it out of his hand and change the subject.

Next time I'll be sure to keep my tampons hidden under the sink.

Well keeping things you don't want to have to explain hidden isn't a bad idea but since the subject came up you might want to get ready to give simple rather straightforward answers to other wise embarrassing questions.

I might have gone with something like private wipes for moms only. Now of course moms only isn't exactly true and neither is wipes but it would give enough of an explanation to sate the general curiosity that was at hand.

Spotted on the counter amidst so many of your other things, that you can be seen using it would explain why this was rather new and unexplained. While at the same time putting it in the catagory of things like tp and underwear not to be played up or focused on.

Sometimes we as parents freak out about things that have an intimate connection when our children discover them and have no idea what there is to be all upset about. It is best to take emotion and embarrassment out of the equation and just deal matter of factly with the situation. Not giving too much information but answering questions in a way children can understand.

That is funny. One day when my son was younger he stuck some kotex on his feet and thought they were for cleaning the floor.I told them honey there for mommy when she gets a boo boo.LOL

I like to go with the standard "Those are for grown-ups"... It's simple and for something that a four-year old boy doesn't really need to know about, does the trick.

I still remember MANY years ago when I was in a bathroom stall somewhere with my mom and saw her using a tampon.   I clearly remember asking her what that was and her saying "something grown-ups go potty on".   Funny how that was a good enough answer for me then, yet I will never forget it!

I dread that question, but have a feeling I will be asked by my curious children someday, for now I try to hide as much as I can!

I was older when I heard the word tampon and my mother still wouldn't tell me what they were.

I was in elementary school and aware of womens issues so I think it was silly of her to keep it a secret as if what I was never going to figure it out? ugh sigh

I guess she figured since it was a word I heard at school from a friend and not something I needed at the time we didn't have to talk about it. But I was old enough to know she was hiding something and it upset me.
