YAY!
I am not a shopper. I hate it. I do as much as possible online. In fact, I can guarantee that the Internet has improved my quality of life. Or, at least, my husband's.

So this weekend we have one objective: buy a used car. I am less than thrilled.

First of all, we are buying this used car because some dumb-a crashed into my beloved, though abused, Geo Prism at the DMV. Then, this dumb-a's insurance company gave us a pittance for the car, my graduation present from college. So insulting.

Second, we have very limited time in which to purchase this second car. I have this weekend off from school and both my husband and I have little homework...for now. Also, we are using my grandma's car, and I'd like to get it back to her.

So today we traveled to North Highlands. (Charming, by the way.) We found something, but the dealer wouldn't negotiate. Sigh. So, later, we drove to Roseville. With a two-year-old. In 100 degree heat. Double sigh. We found something again, but the dealer again wouldn't negotiate.

We came back home, tired, fried, and dejected. Em was way over tired. We bought a frozen pizza and some wine, and mulled over our options. Tomorrow we're heading to another dealership to try our luck again. Wish us luck.

We bought my car at Florin Road Toyota. My husband made an appointment ahead of time with an on-line dealer there. The guy was GREAT and we got the best deal in town. If you're looking for a Toyota, I would highly suggest going there (and making an appointment first). I hate that "car bait" feeling of walking on a lot just looking.

Do you know what you're getting?

We've always has really good luck via private party purchases. It requires a little more leg work, but we got great deals on our Toyota and Honda. We financed the Honda through out credit union, then kept an eye out on craigslist and also visitied the Sierra College used car lot, where we ultimately found it. To protect yourself, you can also do a CarFax report and/or take it to get checked out by a mechanic for a small fee. I would rather have a root canal than visit a car dealership, so for me it's less painful to go private party. Either way, I hope it works out for you...soon!

All of my used cars have been previous rental cars. I've had GREAT luck with them as they are always maintained really well and not driven a ton. I don't know if used rental car agencies sell any of their cars directly, but it may be worth looking into!

Craigslist and other private dealers are also good suggestions. I would for sure take it to a good mechanic first though to get really checked out.
