Completely Drained
When I was in middle school, my dad made me start running. He did this because I lied about my mile time in PE (he's an odd, but lovable man). So one summer I had to run four times a week with him. We got up to four-mile runs by the end of the summer, and it ended up not being a totally awful experience. (Though I whined at the time within an inch of my life.)

He used to tell me at the time that running gives you energy. I believe this to be a lie.

I don't always feel this way, but today was special. I had one of those days where the teacher is out of the classroom working on a project. It's nice cause you don't have to chastise anyone for putting gum under the desk or asking you for the umpteenth time if what we are doing is worth a grade. (Yes, it's always worth a grade.) The bad side: I didn't get any breaks from 8 til 3:30; then I taught an after school class for an hour.

I got home at five, begrudgingly put my workout clothes on and kept telling myself: running gives you energy, running gives you energy, running gives you....well, whatever! Did not work today. It's not that I had a bad time, but I'm really tired now. My knees hurt, and when I got back, my husband told me that the vacuum broke in half today.

I just want to go to bed.

Ok, this is just  my opinion and not scientific at all. I think "Running Gives You Energy" because your body thinks you're going to die. Yup. Die. Think about it. Our cave man ancestors (to whom we owe our genetic programming to eat, gather and procreate). Back then if you ran, you were running away from something... running for your life. That's why your endorphins kick in so hard when you run. Your body thinks you're going to die. Then when you don't the endorphins fade and the pain sets in. We also are the only animal who runs on two legs. What a silly in-efficient way to run! No wonder our knees hurt.

So that's just my opinion (nothing scientific in there to my knowledge) and why I make it a point to only run if I really am being chased by something.

Now back to you. I'm so sorry you had such a bad day. The vacuum must have just been the cherry on top of a poopy day. I really hope the rest of your week is better! ;)

Man I'm sorry you're wiped out:(  I have noticed a huge lack of energy lately myself and although it's hard to psych myself up in the morning I have started some Yoga.  I actually have noticed a difference.  I am much more productive through the day and my lower back pain/sciatica have been improving.

I didn't think it was going to be for me because I normally like high energy things...but I figured I'd give it a try.  I have found myself to be more likely to start yoga in the morning now because unlike the high energy stuff I don't have to snap into action.  It is very calm yet I still get a good work out. 

Now I do plan in re-introducing some aerobic activity to my day but not yet.  I think I need to warm my body/life back into that.  If you are interested I have been using a DVD workout I bought at Target called The Firm Power Yoga.  It was about $15 and about 30 minutes long.

Well I think that you had a rather accomplishing day , no wonder why you are pooped. I think your husband should have told you about the vacuum before your run, you could have hit the mall instread! Keep up the great work and give your knees a rest.

Good for you for getting out there anyway! I have to tell you - reading about you and your running has moved me to move up from walking to running. I love it! My shin splints don't, but the rest of me does.   :)

Yay for you! Running does feel great most of the time. And it's become a part of my life that I can depend on.

I hate shin splints; I suggest looking up exercises to strengthen that part of your leg. There's one where you pick up a cotton ball with your toes, move it to the side, drop it, and repeat 10-20 times. There's other ones and they really help.
