It's so funny
I lived in San Jose for almost ten years and I never really identified myself with that area. It was actually rather accidental that I lived there at all for that long. I went to college there, not really knowing anything about  the city.

There are things that I grew to love. I really liked downtown; there are some cool older buildings, parks, and churches. And they are all kind of hidden. So many of the buildings are empty too, so it gives everything a really cool, creepy feeling.

And of course, there's the fact that I met my husband there. Though, I'm really sure we would have met at some point anyways. Our lives have intersected at several points.

I wouldn't define myself as homesick, but I have moments. Fridays can be particularly lonely for me. My old school has a tradition of people signing up to make snacks for brunch. My new school doesn't do that, and it makes me feel isolated.

I always thought it would be things like happy hour or holidays or my friends' birthdays that would make me miss my old life. Nope. Again, it's little things I never truly appreciated at the time.

I'm sorry you're feeling homesick!
We lived in San Jose (Morgan Hill to be exact) for 6 years (for work). San Jose is a REALLY odd place (where even the homeless have cell phones). Everything is so fast there and sooooo $$$. It's all about the money there (at least it seemed like it to me). How much you have and how yours is better than theirs. I really hated it. I did love being so close to Monterey, Carmel and Santa Cruiz though. Maybe the pace was different in your part of town.

I've made great friends since moving back to the Sacto area six years ago. I like the slower pace here. People seem more genuine to me and helpful.

Being homesick can suck. I'm really sorry. Maybe you could start a snack time. I bet people would like that.

Things got a little less focused on money after the doc com bust, but I have noticed the lack of "bling" here in Elk Grove, and it's refreshing. I grew up in the Bay Area (east bay), and it is weird to not have the city and the beach within short driving distance.

There are things that I definitely appreciate about this area, and I'm looking forward to this summer when I have more time off to explore and make new friends. Thanks for the suggestion about starting my own snack. I'm really good at whining; not so good at acting. :)
