I may be a bit stubborn about this, but I went shopping at Safeway today, and almost all of the fruit and veggies were either from Chile or Mexico.

Do we not live in the sunshine state, the state where food grows all year long? Agriculture is an important part of our state, farmers work HARD to keep their farms running. We are fortunate enough to have farmer's markets where we can buy fruits and veggies with dirt and dew on it.

Yet, the large grocery stores still purchase fruits and veggies from other countries. Just think about the time it takes from picking (with different chemical and pesticide standards than we have), packaging, transporting to the U.S., then to each store. Then it sits there for a while before you buy it. Yuck.

If that is not enough, how about pumping money into OUR economy and into OUR state by buying local. Sure, you can't get rasberries and blueberries now, but do you REALLY need them? How great will they taste in the summer, when they have grown naturally sweet, and cheap?

I have made a choice NOT to buy produce that is imported. I make it a point to tell the people at the store that they should really support our farmers and buy CA. Though I am sure I am talking to deaf ears, if everyone, or every 10th person would make that effort, there may be a change.

Money talks. Your health will reward you.

Now, if they only grew bananas in California!!!
