Getting to know each other for the sake of our kids
Building support networks and getting to know each other is important to raising healthy kids. There are community grants available at First 5 Sacramento to support this.

getting to know each other for the sake of our kids

I've noticed lots of posting on sacmomsclub from moms and parents wanting to connect with others, and wanting their kids to be able to play with other kids. I'm a new mom myself, and have a wonderful 10 month old that is the world to me. It's the most rewarding experience being a parent, but it is honestly sometimes a challenging one too. I don't know what I would without my family and my support system.

This is where my personal and professional life blend together...I work for the First 5 Sacramento Commission on a program called the Community Building Initiative. Through this program, we offer community grants up to $5000 to groups of at least 3 parents or community members. All we require is that the idea you generate benefits children ages zero to five and encourages people to get to know each other. We have funded playgroups, art activities, book clubs, and more.

What we know from personal experience and from the research is that the more connected we are to each other in our communities, the better it is for our kids. They are healthier and safer, and as parents we have others that we can lean on for support and information.

Activities can be simple and fun. The funds can be used on supplies for your project - art supplies, snacks, crayons, etc. The bottom line is that it's all about the kids and about getting to know each other. Remember the way things used to be when kids played outside all the time and we knew our neighbors? These grants are putting the power in your hands to creatively build that sense of community for our families.

We are trying to get the word out about these grants - I wish more people would contact us and apply. There are no income requirements for these grants - anyone is eligible to apply as long as you live in Sacramento County. Part of my job is to help people with the application process - I can answer questions, listen to ideas, help you brainstorm, and even read drafts of your application. I can be reached at fongli@saccounty.net or 876-7386. You can also visit our website at www.sackids.saccounty.net.

The next deadline to apply is Friday, 5:00pm, April 4, 2008 and 5:00pm, August 1, 2008. I hope some of you contact me soon! Thanks for reading!
