Modern Day Punishments

I was having coffee with a girlfriend this morning (as us mothers of teenagers get to do now and then), when the topic of discipline and punishment came up. My friend is the mother of an 8yo girl who is in love with TV. The other day her daughter did something worth punishing and her husband came up with a pretty funny idea. For her punishment, she was forced to delete all of her shows off their TiVo (a digital recording device - DVR - that tapes shows for you.) My friend shared that her daughter was shattered to see all her Hannah Montana shows deleted and the lesson was learned.

All I could think was “WOW! Parenting sure has changed since I was a kid!” Gone are the days of threatening with a spanking or wielding a wooden spoon or “switch.” Now days it’s “I’m taking away your unlimited texting!” and “Don’t make me switch your computer back from DSL to dial-up!” How do you think our children will discipline their children? What’s in store for the future of discipline and punishment?

Wow, that was really clever of him!  I really don't know what kind of discipline will be effective in the future for my kid (good question).  But, I do remember being threatened with the wooden spoon.

Yeah, my husband got the wooden spoon when his mom was on the phone and he and his sister would argue too loud. Always a classic. Cute new profile pic btw!

I think I would cry if someone deleted my Lost, House or American Idol before I could watch it off the DVR.

That's a good one. For my kids it would be America's Funniest Home Videos. But that would punishment for me also since we love laying in bed and watching it together.

Wasn't Lost great last week? I know what you mean Kelli. I never watch shows live anymore and sure as heck can't live without my TiVo. I thought it was a pretty inspired punishment.

Loved the one about switching to Dial Up!  That's so funny!    I can't even imagine what future punishments/consequences might be.    With our daughter the most effective punishment has been charging her fines for punishable deeds.  Money is really important to her so that was the most "painful" and effective method.    That dial up idea though, that has potential...

You make a great point patiencengrace. The money thing wouldn't work at all for my son, nor would the TiVo. His phone however... that has potential. As does the dial-up. It's all about what works for your kids.

This is awesome...I'm going to try it with my 2 1/2  year old and threaten to delete the 15 hours of Scooby on the DVR if she continues to refuse wearing pants or going to bed.
