Easter Advice

As my son got older I found myself wondering what he would enjoy in his Easter basket. He will always get a visit from the bunny in our house (and Santa for that matter) and I didn’t want to drop the ball just because he was maturing. Just what do you get a pre-teen or teenager for their basket? Here’s some ideas for you.

-Go with their hobby. Into Lord of the Rings? Twilight? Harry Potter? Purchase items along those lines. Ebay and Amazon are both great places for finding specific hobby items. Last year my son got a “One Ring” replica (Lord of the Rings) from Ebay in his basket. He still loves it.

-Go for a theme. Are they a reader? Gardener? Hiker? Love travel? Run with the theme. Seeds and garden tools for the green thumb. Artist supplies for the artist. Books or gift card for the reader (bookmarks, book plates, lap desk, etc…)

-Planning a summer trip? Get items that prepare for that. My son is going to Wyoming with his grandparents this summer. I plan on getting him some books and maps on Wyoming to help get him excited about the trip.

-Hygiene Help. One year I took my son to Bath and Body and let him sniff around and explore all their items. Once he picked a product he loved (it was an orange spice line for men), I went back when he wasn't with me and bought 1 of each thing with that smell. I also included a nice hair brush, and bath items. Pre-teens and teens can always use some hygiene help and nice items are pricey. Why not make them a gift!?

-Not just ANY candy! My son like strange candy. Candy from other countries are very popular at his school. I’m planning on hitting Cost Plus for unique items like “Happy Cola.” Japanese gummy sodas.

-Think “outside the basket.” Last year we went on a trip during Spring Break. Rather than fill another basket for my son, I got him a really cute new suitcase (from Ross) and put his goodies in that! He loved it and still uses it whenever we travel.

Good luck and have fun being the bunny!

As ALWAYS, those are great suggestions!  I love the whole idea of thinking "outside of the basket".  Very clever.

I remember you talking about this last year. Such an awesome idea to let a tradition grow up with your child. This will be the first year Em is really aware of Easter, so I'm looking forward to celebrating with her.

Curse you long time SMCer!!! I swear it's a new blog though. Despite my temptation to do some recyling of my own... everything has been new. Didn't last year just whip by? I even remember posting pictures of his "suitcase Easter basket" and talking about our trip. Scary.

I'm sure your family will have a great time. For us now it's all about the egg dying contest. Hehehe.

For future reference, if you have a store like "Extreme Geek" in Davis, (There's one in Rancho Cordova) they have all the funky Japanese candy that teens that are into that stuff like.

They also carry the funky sodas, etc.
