STOP!

Sometimes us busy “does it all” moms just need to stop. I’ve been struggling with a cold since the weekend before Thanksgiving and just wasn’t winning the battle. You know how it goes; you can’t just lie in bed and watch TV all day like the kids when you’re ill. Nope! You’ve got to keep life going for your family and the home (and your jobs if you have to report to other people.) That was me! Just trudging along like nothing was wrong. Well, I would feel better… then worse… then better… then worse. I tried to ignore it, medicate it, go on even though I was sick.

Tuesday I hit a wall. Monday night my throat was killing me and I had a migraine that would not go away. I could tell that I wasn’t getting “over it” and just needed to stop. That’s right, those four horrid words. STOP! Stop running errands, shopping, wrapping, going to class, going to work and waiting on my family. When I stop, the world seems to stop (is that totally egocentrical of me to say?) I stopped, crawled into bed and slept most of the day. I did as little as possible and yes, it was HARD!

Today I’m feeling a lot better. I know if I would have just kept going I could have come down with something even worse thanks to my wrecked immune system (and being surrounded by preschool cooties at work.) I also learned some tips that I’m happy to share!

1) Eat local honey. This will help your immune system (and it’s tasty!)

2) Cook with garlic, ginger and cinnamon. All three help your immune system. If you have any swelling (or cramps), cook with chili pepper (flakes are ok.)

3) It’s ok to stop and rest. The world will not end!

4) Eat healthy. Juice, make a nice soup or broth, get lots of fresh fruits and veg (did you know colored peppers are very high in Vit C?)

5) Breathe!

6) Delegate. If you can’t stop, don’t try and do it all. Accept help and delegate tasks (both at work and with your family)

Good for you for being able to stop.  I wish I could do that.  And I can't delegate.  I don't have anyone to give anything to.  My hubby leaves at 7:30 in the morning and doesn't get back until 8 pm. and my parents live too far away and I don't have many close friendss like I used to, so I'm on my own.  I just push slowly though it all.  Glad you're feeling better.

I used to be in the same boat as you. My husband would leave at 5:30AM and not be home till 10PM. It was HORRID! You have my sympathy. I felt like a single mother who couldn't even date.

Glad to hear you are starting to feel better. Thanks for the tips on ways to stay healthy and the reminder of how important it is to know when to stop...

I am glad you put on the brakes. Sometimes that makes all the difference.

Here's to staying healthy!

Oh, and my mom swears by the open-mouth-lion pose in yoga. You feel lame, but it works. At least, I think it does.

Stand up. Place your hands in front of yourself, parallel to the ground. Spread your fingers out wide. Open your mouth as wide as you can and let your tongue loll out.

Don't do it in front of people. Ever.

But it works.

Oh can i relate to that sick thing. I think it lingers longer on me because i do just keep going and going.

I love your list of things to consume for better health. Its funny those types of things i find myself drawn to eat in large amounts or  over several weeks of time i will crave those things. I like listening to my body it works out well.

Boy, do I know that feeling. I usually feel it most when I finally slam into a wall. At that point, I am worn out, usually sick, and totally crabby. I'm trying to bring back meditation into my day. Even if it is just a 7 minute guided meditation that I downloaded for free off iTunes.

Luckily I'm taking Yoga next symester, so maybe that will help? I'm sure stress doesn't lend a helping hand to me getting sick all the time (at least it feels like all the time!) Thanks for the Yoga pose tip hmoeckli . Glad you all liked the list! I'm sure there's more tips (feel free to share if you can think of any.)

I tried Zycam last time and it did nothing. I also haven't had luck with Airborn. Bummer.

AmandaS , I liked your tip on the guided meditation from iTunes. I'll have to check that out!

Hope , I totally agree that you can be drawn naturally to what your body needs when it needs it. Lucky you!
