"Me-Hood" and "Motherhood"

In this blog I'll be covering as wide a variety of subjects as the duties of a real mom in today's culture.

From raising special needs children, family vacations, marriage, relationships, sex, cooking, local to-do, school (both for you and the children), working, hiring a daycare provider, arts and crafts, decorating, holidays, to well... EVERYTHING!

No holding back.

I have had more jobs that anyone I’ve ever met. No really! I know you think I’m exaggerating, but it’s true. Just take a look:

~Jack in the Box (my first job at 14)
~Wedding Dress Sales Woman
~Weinstocks (remember that department store?)
~Sears
~Stuffed Animal Slipper Sales Woman
~Japanese Sushi Waitress
~Dominoes Pizza
~Knock off perfume door-to-door sales

~Pottery Barn
~Photo & Art Model
~Art Supply Store Sales Clerk
~4 star restaurant waitress (for 1 day)
~Nature Store Sales Clerk
~Daycare Worker (for 1 week, I was too young)
~Discount Wherehouse Clothing Clerk
~Chevy’s (waitress, hostess & bus girl)
~Red Robin (bus girl)
~JC Penny’s
~Process Server
~Census Taker
~Private Nanny
~Advertising Agency Receptionist
~Ad Agency PR Representative
~Ad Agency Sales Rep (all for the same place at one time or another)
~Graphic Designer
~Librarian (Library Paige if you want to get specific)
~Muralist
~Made “Nursing Bibs” and sold them to moms in my baby group
~Para-Educator (school aide for special needs children)
~Adult Residential Mental Health Facility Day-Manager
~Families First office assistant
~Symphony Secretary
~Art Teacher
~Face painter
~Freelance Writer
~Jewelry Designer
~Preschool Teacher

Now take into account that I hardly worked at all once my son was born and the fact that I’m only 35… that should cause some “WOW” factor.

Why am I sharing this? What’s my point? (other than to prove that I do indeed have ADD). To show that life is all about constant growth and learning. Each of these experiences helped shape me into the person I am today, just as much as my friendships and relationships. Without each of these jobs, I would be just a little bit different, and be less sure about the road I’m on now.

So even though I’ve had few careers, I genuinely enjoy trying new things and meeting new people. No, I’m not going to be a preschool teacher forever, but I’m enjoying it while I am.

The next time you may get that feeling like you aren’t really doing what you want with your life, or that maybe you’ve had “too many” jobs, just think about my list and comfort yourself that you have more fortitude than I do. And that just maybe it’s ok to not “know” what you want to be when you grow up, even when you are a grown up. Live each day to the fullest and learn something new.

Wow lady, you've been busy! I feel really boring compared to you. :)

Hahhaa, boring or sane? I always envy people who knew just what they wanted to do, went to college and did it. Now I'm having to start from square 1 at 35 (as far as a career). So yeah, don't be jelous.

Although I feel that teaching is my calling, I do wish that I had been a little more adventurous. I can swing to the other side of the spectrum by being too scared to try anything new. I stay in jobs longer than I should probably.

whoa!
stuffed animal slipper sales girl?  wtf?
i do not envy any job with the words "door to door"  in them.  i might come up to a crazy lady like myself.

well i think that if anything good came from any of these, it's a greater appreciation for those who do these jobs.  i really think that everyone should work at least one year of intense customer service in their lives, then maybe people will be a little nicer to those poor saps behind the counter.
ps. you forgot mom and wife! the hardest jobs of all!

I only included jobs I got paid for (no volunteer work-and there is a lot!) Mom and wife count!

Yeah, there's some crazy ones in there, huh?

And I thought I had a lot of jobs! One time when I was relating another life experience story to my 5th grade class a student asked me, "Just how many jobs have you had?!"

Hey, we've both worked at Chevy's (busser, on the river) and JC Penney's (during the horrible New Kids on the Block phenom -- I had nightmares about being burried alive in NKOTB T-shirts)! And we've both worked in pizza -- my first job (also at 14) was at Straw Hat and yes, when they still wore the straw hats.

That's funny! (that we both worked at so many of the same places.) I never counted before. Looks like 37. Wow!
