OUCH! (That’s Truth)
Yes, the truth does hurt. Especially coming from your dear little offspring. If you still have yet to know the joy of your youngster giving it to you “like it is,” let me help you… it hurts. You will laugh, gasp, sting, but you can’t deny when they hit it on the head. My own little “progeny” (what he prefers to be called over man-cub. I still like man-cub) came up with a doozy for me on Saturday. I was sick (yes, again! Thank you preschoolers) and in bed watching the Biggest Loser. I found that show last season and really love it. The new season just started and I’ve been looking forward to it. Man-cub snuggles up in bed with me (I think he wanted to catch my bug so he could miss school) and starts to watch it. Suddenly I hear the words, “You and dad should go on that show!” HUH! WHAT! “I am NOT as big as the people on that show!” I snap back at him. “Oh yes you are! You’re as big as that girl!” He says pointing to a young blonde. (Actually, I weigh more than her, but I am 6’0!!!) This made me think and we started a discussion. “Does it bother you that dad and I are big and you’re thin?” “No, I’m used to it.” (Somehow I’m not feeling better yet.) “Do your friends ever say anything or tease you?” “One kid who’s a jerk said something about dad once, but he’s a jerk.” (Ok, that’s good, nothing about his Orca mom.) Not surprisingly I haven’t had much of an appetite since this conversation. I told my husband about it, looking for solace. I should have known… “Well, I don’t think we’re QUITE THAT FAT!” He says. Now you know how women hear differently from what men say. What I heard was, “I’m not that fat, but you sure are!” Being together for 16years, I knew I was hearing with my sensitive ears and didn’t impale him in the bagel slicer like I wanted. Instead I took stock of the situation. 1) I’m still about 40lbs less than I was at this time last year. 2) My arms are actually starting to really look toned and good (thanks to the kids at work.) 3) We’re eating WAY healthier than we were even just a year ago as a family. Much more fresh fruits and vege and buying more local produce. 4) I’m not eating nearly as much junk or fast food as I was. YES! There’s still massive amounts of room for improvement. Yes, I’m still overweight. No, I don’t like it and yeah, I need to get off my spreading butt and out the door more. There’s always room for improvement however, and it’s really easy to focus more on your kid telling you you’re fat over the accomplishments you’ve made. 9 comments from 7 users

I love the Biggest Loser show and would love for my mom and uncle to go on it together. They are both a good 100 pounds overweight and for my mom especially I try to talk to her and motivate her to at least walk to the mailbox every day (about 3/4 mile each way since she lives out in the boonies). Her excuse is that my uncle picks up the mail on his way home from work but I just want her to start it as a small goal to get her motivated. I'm currently down to 150 from my post prego weight of 161 a short 4.5 months ago. My goal is 130 and I know I can do it. I gave up losing weight between kids since the week after I finished weaning my son (at 18 months) I got prego with my daughter. Now I'm totally focused on working out hard and eating healthier - except for those binges I go on like today and eat a whole box of chips ahoy - and feel sick about it the next 2 days. My main problem, like my mom, is motivation. What can I say, I love the T.V. and reading. It does help that my husband is very fitness minded and helps me with punches and kicks and helps me stay motivated with compliments. Good luck to everyone else on their goals and wish me luck on mine! posted by

I can relate. My daughter told me how big my butt is and how she wants me to be smooth (like her). I had baby #2 in April and lost all that weight fast. The weight from having baby #1 is taking its sweet time. They say it takes 9 months to put it on and should take at least that to take it off but come on 5+ years? I have begun to think that my body is quite comfortable with this weight even though I protest all the time. I go to ww and weigh in this Saturday so I am hoping to see some results. Good job on the 40 lbs and the changes you've made with the family. Give yourself a pat on the back. posted by

Amanda, you shouldn't be mortified. I have a 5K coming up (the JDRF walk on October 6th) and REALLY should walk before then. Hahaha. Hmoeckli, you're so sweet. Thanks for the compliments. And YES! A mute button would be nice, wouldn't it? posted by

And I really think children should come with a mute button. Anytime you feel an unintentional, yet ouchy verbal moment--beep, hit the mute button! Seriously, they know not what they say. :) posted by

Well, you look GREAT in your picture maryleo9 !!!
I'm not sure if having a fit husband would make me feel better or worse? In a way, we for sure enable each other (badly), but on the other hand we love each other the way we are. I think I'd feel even MORE self-concious and depressed, which would make me eat more, not less. Ahhhh, it's all so complicated, isn't it?
It sounds like you for sure have your head on straight. Eating healthy and working out will get you there in the end!
