Finding a Balance Between
"Me-Hood" and "Motherhood"

In this blog I'll be covering as wide a variety of subjects as the duties of a real mom in today's culture.

From raising special needs children, family vacations, marriage, relationships, sex, cooking, local to-do, school (both for you and the children), working, hiring a daycare provider, arts and crafts, decorating, holidays, to well... EVERYTHING!

No holding back.

Can You Smell It?

No, not the diapers! Fall is in the air. The mornings have been wonderfully crisp, my lawn has a thin coating of fallen leaves (not quite as beautiful as the ones in this pictures, but still…) and the stores are filling with Fall and Halloween delights. This is hands-down my favorite time of year (and not just because the kids are back in school.)

The days will grow shorter and darker and we will find some relief from this searing Sacramento heat. The store will fill with delicious Fall harvest foods (who’s ready for turkey and stuffing!) and our families will gather closer together. This also means, it’s never to early to get a jump on holiday shopping.

How many of you just moaned out loud? I got you all relaxed and then throw that into the mix. Did I make you tense? Sorry, not my intent, and you don’t have to be.

I LOVE on-line shopping for gifts. I avoid the post office AND malls (win-win in my book) and they get unique things. Hands-down my favorite way to do this is on a site called Etsy. Think Amazon, but everything on it is hand-made by an artist. GREAT site. Of course there’s Amazon, but their shipping can be really slow. If you are going to do in-person shopping, take advantage of it being so early and the economic slump. There are AMAZING deals to be had right now. If you stumble across the perfect gift for someone, snap it up! Check the Sunday sales pages.

It doesn’t have to be new. I got my refurbished digital camera on-line through Sony.com and saved about $50 over the best retail price. Same for iPods, iPhones and other tech gear. Refurbished is the way to go.

I also love making gifts. It can seem a little time consuming and pricy if you wait too close to the holiday, so I like to think ahead. Do you have rose bushes on your property? Keep the petals when you dead-head them and make popouri. Enjoy beading? Give some jewelry making a try. Baby's hand prints in baked clay make great wall hanging gifts. Get creative! Click here for some more ideas.

So, get the cider ready, break out the Duriflame log and start making a list. The gift-giving holidays will be here before you know it.

I hear that! I'd love to go to a beautiful fall state and do a tour of the changing leaves.
-sigh- Much better than crying kids and poo.

I too love the fall. I think I will love it even more once I'm retired and can go on vacation instead of starting the school year! :)

Oh wow. We couldn't be more opposite! I'm a Sacto native, but wish I lived in Seattle, or Ireland. I HATE the heat, sun and summer. I adore the dark, cold Winter and Fall. Those nice Fall days where it's grey and heavy with rain, but doesn't actually rain are my favorite! I know... I live in the wrong town.

I have a good friend who loves the heat and sun. She calls me "Polar Bear" and I call her "Lizard Girl." Hahah.

Waaaaah!

I do eventually get caught up in the feelings and activities of Fall.  I absolutely loooove baking cookies in November and December (see my profile pick).

But... I have to say I am a Sun Baby.  Yes despite my paleness and all my freckles, I am solar powered.  I grew up in a So. Cal. house 1 block from the beach!

I don't mind the cold so much as I miss the sun.  I get a little lethargic and sad and tend to sleep more in the Winter.  After a few years living here I figured out I needed those sun imitator lights in the kitchen.  It has really helped.

So while I mourn the shrinking daylight hours, I can see perspective of your enthusiasm too.  It just takes me longer to get into the spirit of the 'season' while I deny for a little while longer that it's really happening...'those leaves on the ground are just a sign that the tree needs more watering", 'It's too early for to put the floor fan away, we'll need it again once the cold-snap passes", "We'll regret putting those shorts up for the winter when we have that last heat-snap in a few days..."  That sort of thing.

Once I accept it I'll be ready for the annual trek to Apple Hill and the Placer County Farm Tour, the obligatory field trip to the pumpkin patch and the Manderin Orange Festival and all the craft vendors that those trips entail...

For now I'm basking in denial for just awhile longer.  Fall doesn't really start until Monday - I can call it Summer for a few more days...

First off, I LOVE your profile pic. My gosh how sweet! And yes, LOVE etsy (and buying local.) It's so nice to know you're helping local artists (many of whom are moms themselves) earn a few bucks by doing things they love. I've purchased a lot on Etsy over the last two years and adore everything.

YAY FALLLL!!! I'm up for hot cocoa and blankets!

Oh my gosh...I love this!!

Yes, fall is one of my favorites toooooo.

I have to say I am going to buy from Etsy this year.  All the wonderful shops are hand made.  Handmade gifts are EXTRAORDINARY.   I like the fact that you can click on the "BUY LOCAL" and type in "DAVIS" or "ROSEVILLE" and you get all the items people make in that area.  It is really fun.

Hooray,  Harbingers of Faaaalll....  We broke out the hot chocolate, the pull overs and the cozy blankets  :)
