I hate my dog
Ok… not really. I actually love both my dogs very much. However, our older dog Snack recently had to have a mass tumor removed from the back of her leg. My last month with her went like this. - There’s a lump on the back of my dog’s leg. Hey honey! Let’s keep an eye on that! -The lump is still there and looks like it’s getting bigger. Hey honey! Let’s take her to the vet. - Biopsy, tests and exam. It’s not a big deal we’re told. They’ll call us with the lab results. - We get a call. It IS a big deal. She has a Mass Tumor and needs it removed right away. - Surgery, stitches, pain pills and a (too short) e-collar. She should be fine, but there’s a 50% chance it can come back. -Three days later, she’s able to get at her back leg in spite of the e-collar. -Yesterday… I come home to my husband telling me “It doesn’t look too good!” Understatement of the year. She tore her stitches out and I can see inside her leg. I will NEVER know why he didn’t call me on my cell phone (rrrrg.) We rush her to the only animal hospital open on a Sunday and bend over with our wallets open. My son had been asking about going to Now even people who LOVE LOVE LOVE their dogs would be a little irritated at this point. We’re starting all over with her from a recovery point of view and I have to give her more pills than a 90yo who had a stroke. I love my dog, but this was a really bad week for her to decide to chew out her stitches. All the stress and exposure to various toddler body fluids at work have done their job and I’m now down with a cold today. Did I mention my first class starts tonight? Yeah, I’m in a “poor me” space today, but I do still love my dog. (The pictures are Snack post-op-round 1- with her e-collar. The other one is our “good” dog Sweetie) 12 comments from 8 users

That's a toughie...years ago, when I was single and had disposable income, I invested more than $2k in my beloved cat Homey who got hit by a car. He was only 1 1/2, so he had a good long life ahead of him. He lived another 14 years, so I guess amortized over that time, it wasn't so bad. But today, It would have been "Love ya, but I got a mortgage to pay..." I hope Snack, and you all, recover soon. My poor me of the month happened yesterday. We've had our eye out on a good deal for a flat screen TV, and found one what was highly rated on Consumer Reports and on sale. Just as I was getting ready to go buy it, my husband was in the bathroom trying to fix the tub faucet/valve because we weren't getting any hot water. He wrenched too hard and broke it off...thankfully the water was off at the time, but we couldn't turn it back on w/o having a plumber come out. The guy was super nice and capped off the valves so we could turn the water back on, but he's coming back on Wednesday to rip out a good sized portion of the tile to put in a new valve. The plumbing job itself should be about $900, and i haven't yet figured out what we'll do about the tile...maybe a patch job, maybe all new tile in the shower...cha ching...bye bye flat screen!! Hang in there and feel better! posted by

TwinkiesMom , that's terrible about the pipe! YIKES!!! It seems theres always an emergency whenever you think you're finally going to get ahead, or get a treat (like the TV). I hope the bill is low. Thanks for sharing about your cat. It's nice to have the reminder that it's an investment in a friend and for her whole life. She's 8 now, so hopefully she'll have a lot of good years left with us. wifemotherdaughtersister, yeah. Sadly BOTH my dogs are attention freaks. Snack doesn't like her little confinement area and keeps trying to break out. Luckily it's in our room, so we both took a well-earned nap together today. That dog is wearing me out!! And yes, just how do you put a financial cap on those things?! Living in Davis you'd think vet care would be less! If anything, I think it's higher here. Then of course if you don't do what they recommend you're an evil pet owner. I have yet to meet a pet owner who doesn't just bleed money for their animals. posted by

So sorry to hear of your dog's tumor. I hope he will recover fully and you, too, from the expensive vet bill. I appreciate your writing skills once again, especially the "bending over with the wallet" part. At least you haven't lost your sense of humor. If I would have known when I was younger how much vets make, I would have gone into that field! Last week a friend of mine had some issue with their little dog. It seems it has been never ending for them and this pup ..... to the tune of over $4,000!!! Does that make you feel any better?
My "poor me" story is about van problems....first, that I have to drive one and, second, there is more oil on my driveway than in all of Saudi Arabia. I have three different oil leaks to get fixed to the tune of $1700. Also my cell phone is acting up. Not a good thing when the van is on the blink. Hopefully in the next few days we'll get over the immediate problems and back to less stressful times. Good luck everyone. posted by

hmoeckli , I'm feeling better tonight (after venting in my whiney blog). I'm down to the clamy sweaty phase of my cold now. Sooo sexy! And yeah, it was REALLY gross. I had to put on gloves today to put the cream on her wound and it really made me gag. I DON'T want to to it again tonight, but I love her... and don't want more vet bills. girl4agreenerworld, $4K! Yikes! I do feel better now. That's terrible! I know vet's make BANK!!! I feel like I should at least get a mocha or massage out of the deal! That's terrible about your car (but you gave me a funny visual with your eloquence!). Is your plan up soon? I got a Sony cell at the beginning of summer for really cheap and love it. Here's to hoping we all win the lottery soon! posted by
