A Farewell to Summer

It’s that time of year again. I can practically SMELL the pencils being sharpened and hear the moaning as I mention that this week is the last week of summer. Sadly, it’s the last week for us both (my classes start Monday, man-cub’s start Wednesday).

We always like to do a little last “hurrah” to summer around this time. In years past it’s varied from a quick trip to Monterey, to enjoying the CA State Fair. This year we wanted to do something different. Instead, we sent summer out with a “Huzzah!”

Yesterday we went to a Renaissance Faire in Golden Gate Park (San Francisco). I asked my aunt, her daughter and fiancé if they would like to join our merry band. It turns out that my cousin lives right across the street from the area of the park where the fair was held. We donned our best costumes (thank you Ebay) and trouped over to the faire. We had an amazing time. I had honestly forgotten how fun they are.

The weather was cloudy and grey, the sun was nowhere to be seen all day (just the way we all like it). The faire was pretty large, but very un-crowded. We shopped a little, my son did some archery, my husband and son did a little spontaneous play with a group of actors (check out the pictures). My personal favorite was a weaver woman there. She hand-spins her own yarn, then weaves the most beautiful blankets, wraps and capes I’ve ever seen. Sadly her skill is reflected in her fair prices, but it was out of my budget for the weekend. I did slip her card to my husband and whisper (Christmas) in his ear.

All the hand-made items were amazing. Of course, I was sad to see them sprinkled through “Made in China” wares, but it’s to be expected. As great as the fair was, it paled in comparison to the old Black Point Forest Ren Fair of old (where my husband and I got married years ago).

My son had an amazing time. I don’t think he’s quite ready to go back to school yet, but it was a lovely farewell to summer.

Looks like fun.  I have always wanted to attend a Ren. Fair.  Are there people attending who are not in time period attire?  Or is that frowned upon?

Sounds like fun...I haven't been to a Ren Faire in about 8 years, though I used to go more frequently when I lived in LA. Got to love the big turkey legs. Sounds like the perfect end-of-summer retreat!

Yup, there were quite a few people w/o a costume. I've been w/o before, but think it's more fun with. I like how you can just dress pretty much however you want and no one really cares. Like my costume wasn't at all "accurate", but I liked it. Same with the other members of my family. Most faires also have costume rentals if you'd be interested. Me? I like Ebay.

Man-cub did indeed have a turkey leg for lunch. Shockingly enough, this one also had nachos, funnel cakes, corn dogs and onion rings. See! Who needs the state fair! Hahaha.

I spent my college years in a medieval history group, much like Ren-fair.  Making costumes and fighting in armor.  Then, went on my merry, merry way and got married. haha.  Visited back after the kids were born and saw some ol' kin folk again.  It's been many, many, years.  How nostalgic!!

Sounds like a great time! I think an end of summer celebration is very appropriate. My grandma's birthday always serves that purpose.

Your pictures are great!

You are just too way cool for school! What a fun way to end the summer.

And I love how you call your son man-cub. Very appropriate for us momma bear types.

MamaSeaShell , that's really cool! I wouldn't be surprised if my son didn't get into something similar. He had a blast and adores LARPing and LOTR (that's Live Action Roll Playing and Lord of the Rings for those of you without dorks in your family). Glad I could give you a blast of nostalga. I'm sure we'll be back next year. It was a good fair.

hmoeckli , I'm glad you liked the pics!

kellimwheeler , you're too sweet! I always loved the Jungle Book as a kid, so Man-Cub kindove stuck. And yeah, I'm a TOTAL mama bear!
