Healthy Pleasures

I was stretching out on my back patio this morning with the sun on my back as my dogs frolicked through the yard thinking “ok, now this is a GREAT way to start my day.” This thought led me to ponder the healthy changes I’ve made in my life and how much I genuinely enjoy them. Here are just a few…

~ Cooking healthy foods for my family. This morning I made little mini cheese-less quiches for breakfast. They were delicious, fast and healthy. Everyone loved them.

~ Being in the sun. This is something I used to HATE. I was always such a night lover. Now I find myself relaxing and enjoying the gentle heat of a spring sun. Feeling its warmth spread over my skin and soak my muscles is delightful.

~ Shopping at our farmers market. Davis has one of the best farmers markets in CA (in my opinion). Fresh organic goods as far as the eye can see. Our favorite things to buy there are brown rice (I know, I used to hate it too. I swear this rice tastes like butter though!) and double yolk eggs. My son still thrills every time he cracks one open. You have such an old-world feel and sense of community when you shop there that you just don’t get from even the best grocery store.

~ Playing doubles tennis with my friends on Fridays. I’m still not fit, nor skilled enough for a rousing singles game (beyond 5min long), but riding my bike to the courts and playing with my friends is a pleasure I look forward to every week. We’re all improving too!

~ Family walks. Taking family walks together, even if it’s just around the block is an evening ritual I would like to indulge in more often. There’s something so nice about moving while we chat and reconnect. Saying “Hi” to the neighbors and seeing the joy it brings our dogs is the utter definition of “simple pleasure.”

I gained a few pounds while on vacation in Vegas last week. Despite my prediction that all the walking we did would keep them at bay (curse you M&M store!) However, I was back on track this week and have already shed them. Yay! Now I hope to get even more serious and lose some more! I have a family party this summer with people who haven’t seen me for a year and I’d like to look my best. It’s good to have goals like that to help you stick to your regimen.

Those are great healthy pleasures! I love the walks with the family around the neighborhood.  Also, I keep going through these random spurts of going to the local Farmers Market and need to start going continuously!  I love the feel of the sun on my skin, but as a redhead with fair skin I'm trying to be more cautious about my exposure to it (lots of sunscreen and brimmed hat).

Target has some REALLY CUTE wide brim hats for this season. Last time I went they were on sale for $9. All colors and the kind you can crunch up to pack and they're fine. I LOVE the invention of spray-on sunblock. It must have been a mom who came up with that one.

I'm a recent member, and I've really enjoyed your blogs.

Your blogs are always great and I wanted to say I too try to remind myself of all the good stuff I do on a daily (or at least try to do daily) basis!  I have started going to the gym again, California Family Fitness, and my daughter LOVES it.  I keep thinking if I continue to go (which she is usually the one who begs me to go) she will learn this wonderful habit and maybe I can break the chain of "fat girls" in my family.  Unfortunately we all love to eat great food.  Sometimes healthy, sometimes not - but we don't exercise.  I, however love to exercise - and just getting there is half the battle.  So here's to you and your great blogs and please keep being the open woman that you are.  By the way, the picture you have posted is a great and beautiful picture.  It says SO much!  Good for you!

Welcome and thank you for the kind post. It always makes my day to hear that another mom enjoys what I have to say.

I know what you mean about "breaking the chain". In my family that's a long chain indeed. Breaking it is very difficult. Especially breaking it while still respecting and loving myself no matter what. That's why I try hard to focus on health vs. size. It's difficult, but worth it. That's great that you're being a good healthy example to your daughter by exercising. You should be very proud of that!

I love your profile picture as well. Your daughter is very beautiful!
