A Change in Plans

My family and I had been planning a Spring Break vacation to Hawaii for some time now. It was something I was really looking forward to. We had the dates all set, March 24th-28th. As the date drew near, we started seriously looking at vacation packages. We were pretty shocked. For a family of three to have a decent vacation in Hawaii (any island) during those days would cost us around $8K. Now we’re talking nice, not luxury or five star, just nice. We were in a state of sticker shock and I was feeling pretty disappointed.

After checking out a few other options (Mexico, Atlantis resort, Florida), it was time to re-group. What did we really want out of this vacation? “To relax!” I told my husband. No, not relax. REEEEELLLLAAAXXXXX!!!!! Toes in the sand, drink in hand, everyone happy… that kind of vacation. Then, I had an epiphany… what about Vegas?

Now I know what you’re thinking. Not exactly top of the list for family destinations, right. “Sin City” and all that. However, I got on-line and did some searching. My husband and I had been the Las Vegas a few times in the past recently and really love it. But could it really be a good family destination? What I found was interesting.

First let me say that our son will be 14 next week, so we aren’t traveling with little kids. I think a teenage vacation is very different than a real “family” vacation. He also has a wicked sense of humor and loves fantasy. I quickly stumbled across something the whole family would love. The Broadway play Spamalot is showing at the Wynn. I was so excited! We all three love Monty Python and seeing this was a must. At Excalibur they have a horse and knight show (just like Medieval Times) that would thrill the most die hard Lord of the Rings fan (which my son is). If we stay at the Mirage, they have everything Hawaii has. Of course in the shiny, not-quite-real Vegas way… but have it just the same. We can even book a room with an erupting volcano view.

The more we looked at a Vegas vacation (the pools, waterfalls, cabanas, walking everywhere, M&M store, great family shows, beautiful aquarium full of sharks) the more I was actually excited about it. Sure it’s campy and silly, but it’s also fun, close and affordable. We all talked about it and decided it would be our vacation stop.

Cutting our budget a little (but living it up in Vegas) will also allow my son and me to take a special trip to our favorite place in the world this summer, Disneyland!

So now with my suit on order and our plans being finalized, I’m just as excited as if we were still going to Hawaii!

First of all, $8k for 4 days?!?!?! That is ridiculous. I know they jack up prices during holiday periods, but that is crazy.

Second - Vega$ baby! You guys will have so much fun! The Flamingo has really neat pools. I like the Coca Cola museum. And Gameworks is fun, too. Of course, I haven't been to Vegas since pre-kids, so maybe this stuff isn't around anymore?

You guys will have a great time! I'm so excited for you!!!

Gotta roll with the punches, good for you woman.

Makes total sense.

And yes Vegas is not just for gamblers and other vices there are other things to do for families.

Where ever you go I am sure you will have a great time. It is about just getting away together and enjoying your teen woo woo

Sounds fun to me!   Plus you will have a much cheaper and quicker flight!    I love going to Vegas, and rarely even spend time gambling.   There is so much to see.  Maybe your son would enjoy Circus Circus too, I still enjoy that now :-)   And don't forget to check out the Fremont Street Experience!

You guys are all sweet. I thought people would think I'm nuts for taking my son to Vegas (or even thinking of Vegas for a family vacation!).

What's Fremont Street? Is that where all the old signs are from the Rat Pack days?

The Coke store is next door to the M&M one, right?

WOW!!!!  $8K!!! That is an incredible amount for a vacation.  Who could relax knowing that they were paying that much money for a few days?  I'm sure you will have a great time in Vegas and I think your son will like it too.  We stopped there for a short time when we were taking a car trip to the Grand Canyon two summers ago.  My son was quite taken by all there was to do and see....lots of excitement!  Who knows...you may get lucky at the casinos and make enough money for a Hawaiian vacation next year.  Good luck at the tables.

Hahah. Thanks G4GW. I don't think we'll be gambeling this trip (poo), but who knows. I agree. For $8K I'd better be getting 24-7 massages and flying first class. I wouldn't enjoy myself spending that much.

Plus, now I have Disneyland to look forward to too. Another good fit goal for me. To fit comfortably on the rides there this time. Hahaha.

What a bummer! But I'm not surprised at the cost. My brother-in-law is getting married in Maui in August. We looked into airfare, hotel, car rental, etc. and decided that just my husband would go. It would be too expensive for all four of us. Besides, they're having a reception in Sacramento after their wedding.

Sounds like Vegas is just the thing. Plus, you still get to wear your new bathing suit!

Totally! I'm really excited about it. It sounds like you're doing the right thing to just stay and attend the Sacramento reception.

My suit came on Saturday. It is sooo cute! I love it. It'll look even better with two more months of eating healthy and exercise.

Fremont Street is the "old Las Vegas" with old original casinos.   The street is covered by a giant screen and shows cool light shows, like being in a tunnel.   It's worth checking out if you have time, I'm sure kids would dig it :-)   http://www.vegasexperience....    Not sure about Coca Cola place, I think it is by the M&M factory.   So much to do and see in Vegas, I think I need a trip there soon!

Good to hear your suit came, now hang it up where you can see it!   I'm too afraid to look at suits yet, but I see the stores are starting to come out with them now.

Thanks for the great advice on the suit. I will do that! I think I'll tape the pic of it to my fridge too.

My husband knew what Fremont Street was and showed me on-line. We'll try and hit it. We had fun this weekend working out our budget and itinerary. Can't Wait!
