Ok, I understand that school is a place to learn, but some of my fondest elementary school memories are of our school parade at Halloween. So as I got older and had my own kids, it saddened me last year (when my twins were in Kindergarten) that their school--like many others-- didn't let kids dress up for school or celebrate Halloween at school. Come on, they're kids!! This year, though, their new school (the school they went to last year was among those closed by SJUSD, but that's another blog entry...) has come up with a great idea to combine education with celebration...The kids can dress up, as long as they dress as a character from a book, and bring the book to school with them. Excellent idea!! After perusing the bookshelf in their room, we all got very excited when they chose to be Thing 1 and Thing 2 from The Cat and the Hat! Red sweats from Target, a blue fuzzy had that I picked up from the dollar store and some iron on tape and we are good to go!! (No store bought costumes here...) So if your child's school is among the many that scare away celebration of Halloween, perhaps you can float this idea by the powers that be and bring a little celebration to the day.
Each Friday at my kids school is "Cooking Friday," where they help prepare a simple snack for the whole class. They also send the recipes home with kids so you can make them at home. Last week they did a cute "Edible Spider" recipe that the kids loved (okay, so it's not all that healthy, but everything in moderation...I've also included an idea for a healthier/no cook version below). Here is the recipe below. Please feel free to post your favority Halloween treat recipe to share. Edible Spider I bag of Large Marshmallows 1 bag of Small Marshmallows 1 bag pretzel sticks Melted chocolate (the kind that hardens, you can usually find it in the produce section) (Each spider gets 1 large and 1 small marshmallow, and 8 pretzel sticks.) Dip the small marshmallow in the melted chocolate (this is the spider's head). Place it on the large marshmallow (this is the spider's body). Dip the pretzel sticks in the chocolate and stick four on each side of the large marshmallow (spider legs). Let chocolate harden and cool. Eat and enjoy! Healthier alternative. Use the Large Marshmallow as the spider's body and use raisins as they eyes/head. You can still use the pretzel sticks, just don't dip them in chocolate. Happy Halloween!! |
