What's For Dinner?

I was recently inspired by the finale 'The Next Food Network Star".  I love to cook but rarely make the time for from-scratch dinners. Take that and mix it with the fact that I really need to get a handle on my grocery budget and meal planning.  I recently joined Thegrocerygame.com for the trial period.  I like using coupons, I just don’t have the time to figure out when items are at their best time to buy, and I am especially bad at knowing meat/chicken/fish prices to know when to buy and stock-up.

From the GG, I learned that Safeway had Fryers on sale for .79/lb. This, apparently, is a fantastic price and so I bought four.

I have never been really great at cooking whole meats (whole birds, roasts...). But I was inspired to try again with one of the recipes from the finale episode: Beer Can Chicken.

But I decided to make this tonight. Isn’t it beautiful?

Everyone cleaned their plates. TripletDad proclaimed it ‘the best chicken I’ve ever eaten’ – not just the best that I’ve made, the best he’s ever eaten!  He wants me to make it for everyone that we invite over!  LOL!  All my kids had seconds!  TD had thirds.

The sautéed, garlic green beans were also a big hit. The corn was so delicious, I didn’t even put butter on it.  It was a simple meal that turned out fabulous!  I’m so proud! I'm 37 years old and this is the best chicken I have ever cooked.

I can't believe someone else is up as late as I am tonight! LOL!
Glad I could give you dinner inspiration.

My problem with coupons is I like buying food that doesn't come with coupons. Like you never see one for Herloom Tomatoes!

Good for you for trying something new. The pictures are great. I'm glad your family enjoyed your hard work.

Thanks!

Yes, that's the thing, for the fresh items that never have coupons, I have never tracked their prices to know when it is a good price.

I have always planned my meals (if I've planned at all) and then shopped for what I need for those meals.

But now I want to try to follow the sale prices and plan my meals around the sales.  I want to see if I can really shave down my shopping budget that way.

We've also started going to the store, buying our meat, and then figuring out what we are making. It's saved us quite a bundle because meat prices, especially chicken, vary a lot.
