SunshineMommy - > Saving for a Bright Future -> College Savings Month
College Savings Month

Did you know that September is College Savings Month?  It's the perfect time to start thinking about saving for your little one's future!  One of the best options out there are 529 plans.  A 529 plan is a college savings plan that is run by a state and is tax-deferred.  Distributions taken from the account to pay for your kiddos college also come out federally tax-free.  California actually offers a 529 plan called the ScholarShare College Savings Plan.  I was lucky enough to have someone give me information about ScholarShare and a contribution as a gift at my babyshower.  If, like me, the idea of saving for college seems scary- fear not my friends!  I am happy to report that setting up the account was relatively painless and since the initial set up, I haven't had to do anything except drop money into the account.  Since it's College Savings Month,ScholarShare is actually going to be at some fun events around town!  It's a double whammy- you get to take the kids out for some fun AND get some really invaluable information on saving for college!  Both of the following websites have information too: www.treasurer.ca.gov/scholarshare and www.scholarshare.com.  Have you started saving for college yet?

Upcoming Events

September 27: "ScholarShare Day" at the Explorit Science Center in Davis.  General admission:$4 (children under 3 are free).

September 27-28: "Target Children's Book Celebration" at Fairytale Town.  Admission is free.
