Mom's Always Write
Do you have a great idea for a children's book? Well, now is your chance to share your story. In correlation with Fairytale Town's Children's Book Celebration on September 27-28, SacMomsClub is teaming up with Fairytale Town to conduct a Children's Book Writing Contest. Moms, we encourage you to submit your original, unpublished stories for a chance to have it illustrated by a local artist and then published! Here's the 411... Post your story here by August 29, 2008 (11:59PM to be exact) One entry per person Submissions should be between 200 - 500 words and appropriate for children between the ages of 2 and 8 years old (save the novels for another day) A team of judges will select five finalists to be announced on September 3, 2008 The five finalists will each receive a goodie bag from SacMomsClub and Fairytale Town including a $25 Borders gift card YOU will determine the grand prize winner by voting between September 3 - September 12, 2008 Grand prize winner will be announced on September 13, 2008 Winner will have her book illustrated by a local artist and then published, plus will have the opportunity to read her book onstage at Fairytale Town's Book Celebration on September 28. Here is our submission to Mom's always write! We feel that if you make learning fun, a child will respond. This book has all the necessary elements of an entertaining story, along with a rhyme that is specifically targeted at teaching children to count to 10. Title: Speeder the Frog - Learning to Count By: Eric & Nancy Rochelle Speeder the frog lives in a log by the side of an old house. Speeder and his best friend Willie the mouse love to sing and count. But Willie’s younger brother Timmy has no fun with the numbers and when Speeder and Willie start to count Timmy goes into a sad slumber. Speeder the frog has an idea to help Timmy learn to count, let’s make up a song that’s fun to sing and that Timmy can scream and shout. A song always makes it fun to teach a new idea or task and now that Timmy is old enough he will learn these numbers fast. But Willie the mouse was not so sure that little Timmy wanted to count because every time Timmy starts to try he just begins to pout. Speeder the frog is not the one to give up on an idea so easy. He said let’s try, it can never hurt and as a team they began to get busy. So let’s have some fun and start with one and see where we can go, and if Timmy does not want to sing the song he can simply say NO! Speeder the frog sat back and began to sing at the top of his lungs and before you knew, both Speeder and Willie were having loads of fun. As I recall the song started with one and ended with the number ten and once you were done it was so much fun you wanted to sing it again. THE SONG: 1 is fun to say and sing and it’s the lowest number I know. One is also the number I use when I begin to count my ten toes. 2 is cool because it is the number of pizza slices I can eat. And by the way it’s also the number I count when I am looking at my feet. 3 for me is the number of times I can jump into the air, it is also the number of minutes I stand in the corner when I pull my sister’s hair. 4 is the number of legs Willie has because he is a mouse and my mommy always tells me to take off my shoes when I walk into the house. 5 is for the hive of bee’s I see at the top of the old oak tree and dad says never touch the bee’s because they might get mad and sting me. 6 is for the mix mommy uses to make my favorite chocolate cupcakes, but daddy says eating to much junk food is always a big mistake. 7 is for heaven, which mommy and I pray to each and every night and after I’m done she tucks me in and hugs me oh so tight. 8 is NOT so great because it’s the time I go to bed, but if I’m good I sometimes get to stay up and play with my older brother Ted. 9 is the time I go with Willie to our morning gymnastics class, we jump and play and run around and boy I sure am fast. 10 is the end of the numbers I will use to finish up this song and if my mommy will let me continue to play, I will sing this all night long. The song is done, it was so much fun to sing and dance and play. Let’s go get Timmy I bet he can count to ten by the end of the day.

Mommy, do you think of me? As a little boy laid down to sleep, he asked his Mommy, "Do you think of me?" His Mommy asked him what he meant. The little boy explained that when his mommy went to work, he missed her and wondered if she thought of him while she was away. The Mommy told her son that she wanted to tell him of all the times that she misses him throughout the day. And she started with her story.... When I back out of the garage and I see your bicycle, I miss you and I miss watching you ride up and down the street. When I turn on the radio to my car, I miss you because children's songs begin to play and I think of all the fun we have singing songs and dancing together in my car. When I stop at a stop sign and I see a crossing guard, I miss you and I think of all that you are learning when you are away from me. When I enter my office and pass by the snacks in the kitchen, I miss you and think of the snacks we enjoy making together. When I have a meeting with a client that is being demanding, I miss you and think that negotiating with you is a lot more fun. When I attend a conference call, my mind drifts and I look around the room and miss you because you and I have so much fun playing I Spy together. When I sign my name to documents, I miss you because I think of all the fun we have together playing tic-tac-toe. When my phone rings at work, I miss you because I wish I could talk to more throughout the day. When the sun starts to fall, I miss you because I know you are waiting for me to come home before going on an adventure in the backyard. When I come home from work, I see you and I am overjoyed, but I miss the time I have spent away from you. You are always in my heart and in my mind son. As the Mommy looked over to her son, she realized he had fallen asleep. Just then, the mommy kissed her son on his forehead and told him that someday she will miss these wonderful nights together. posted by

Brothers! Brothers! Superheroes! Superheroes! Hi. I'm G-Man and this is my brother L-Superman. Each day we find a new adventure. ( picture would show two brothers ages 5 and 3 facing eachother doing there superhero handshake saying "Brothers! Brothers!, Superheroes! Superheroes!" turn page) Sunday morning...time to patrol outer space, keeping the earth safe and sound. Captain Pops prepares us for launch. 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1...BLAST OFF! Looking out for the whole world is a tough job, but I can do anything with my brother by my side. (picture: dad "launches" the boys onto the bed. earth beach ball on the ground. now opposite page) We were almost to the moon when I hear L-Superman shout "Meteor Shower!" With my super strength and his super speed, we knocked the meteors back out to space and the earth was safe. (Pillows are meteors knocked to the ground. next page) Back in the office on Monday morning, I knew something just didn't feel right. Doctor Dog breath was on the prowl again. L Superman was trapped and I was his only hope. "G-Man is here, never fear!" I said dog treat in hand. (picture of younger brother coloring in parents office and their dog licking him. opposite page) Doctor Dog Breath could not resist the treat and L Superman was safe. (picuture of boys giving their dog a treat and rubbing her belly) X-Girl has big plans for us today. On Tuesday we are off to the superhero obstacle course. Jumping, climbing, and practicing our super skills are all very important to keep us strong and healthy. (picture of boys with there mom at the park. opposite page now) Just as were are sitting down for a power packed lunch, L-Super man and I spotted a thief in the shadows. We were up in a flash and chasing the winged sandwich grabber away. We lost one PB & J, but we were sure that the bird wouldn't be back for more. (picture of them having a picnic and bird grabbing a sandwich and the boys chasing it away. next page) All wet today...Wednesday we need to explore the sea and check on all our underwater friends. Time for the G-Man splash down, while L Superman takes a ride with the dolphins. (picture of boys, one jumping in the pool, the other swimming with his dad. opposite page) I spot cargo from a nearby ship, sunk to the bottom of the sea. I am a super diver and have them off the sea floor in no time. L-Superman has them loaded back on the ship in a flash. (picture of G getting diving dudes and L swimming them back to their toy ship. next page) Having a brother is the best and being superheroes together lets us work together while having fun. We decided Thursday would be a good day helping out at the local garden. (picture of kids working in garden with parents, raking and digging. oppisite page) Knee deep in cut grass and dirt, we saw two eyes staring at us. A crocodile had gotten loose from the local zoo. I scooped him up, ready to carry him home. "G-Man I have him!" L-Superman shouted. X-Girl swooped in and reminded us being superhero brothers was all about teamwork, so we worked together to get the crocodile back to the zoo safely. (picture of boys finding a big pretend crocodile in the grass and their mom helping to work out a conflict. next page) Friday we had to use our super skills to make a special surprise for guests coming over the next day. (picture on both pages of the boys helping out for a party. next page) Even super heroes need a day off, so we planned a Super Saturday party for our friends. This is G-Man signing off after a week of adventure with L-Superman...My Brother! Appletina Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Appletina who lived in a giant apple. Inside the apple, she had carved out a little bed, table, and chair for herself. Whenever she got hungry, she just scraped off a bit of her wall and had a bite of apple to fill her up. One day, she decided that she was tired of always eating apple. She had apple for breakfast, apple for lunch, and apple for dinner. Appletina decided to go out into the world to try and find something else to eat. She opened her apple-peel door, and stepped out onto the smooth stone ground outside. After she had walked a little while, she found a giant banana in a giant basket. “A banana would be quite delicious,” Appletina said to herself as she wrapped her arms around the huge banana in a big bear hug. Just then, Appletina saw a giant face come towards her, and a giant hand pick up the huge banana. Appletina held on for dear life as she was lifted high into the air. “Hey! This is my banana!” Appletina shouted up at the big giant face. The big giant face looked down at her. “Well, it’s in my kitchen, on my counter, and my mom said I could have it,” the big giant face told her. “Who do you think you are?” Appletina yelled angrily. “Just because you’re a giant doesn’t mean you get to have everything all to yourself.” “I’m Delaney,” the big giant face told her. “And I’m not a giant. I’m a little kid. I’m only three.” “You don’t look like a little kid to me,” Appletina told her, “You’re huge. Hasn’t anyone ever taught you to share?” “I am going to be sharing this banana with my cousin Allura,” Delaney told Appletina. “And she’s not really big, you are just very tiny,” Allura added. “I don’t think I’m tiny,” Appletina said indignantly. “I live in a giant apple that I carved into a house all by myself.” “The one on the counter?” Allura asked, pointing to Appletina’s house. “Yes, that giant one over there,” Appletina declared. Delaney and Allura looked carefully at the apple. “It’s not a giant apple,” said Allura. “It’s a regular sized apple. You are just very, very tiny.” “If you want to be our friend, we will share our banana with you,” Delaney told Appletina. Appletina slid off of the banana and onto Delaney’s hand. “I always thought I was a normal size,” Appletina said, amazed. “I would love to be friends with you girls and share the banana.” Delaney and Allura smiled. Delaney peeled open the banana and broke off a little piece for Appletina, and broke the rest in half to share with Allura. Appletina thought the banana tasted even more delicious than it had looked. And from that day on, Allura and Delaney were always careful not to eat the special apple that was their new friend Appletina’s house.

Is there a way that we can e-mail in our submissions? I am not sure I want to post a story here that I have worked hard on with the possibility of others taking my ideas.
Also, you may want to change your title to "Moms Always Write" instead of "Mom's Always Write". posted by

This was Mine First By AmandaS (For Carmen) I never get anything first. My sister is five. She is taller, louder, and faster than me. She always gets everything first. I am three and… I never get anything first. My things are called hand-me-downs. Mommy says that hand-me-downs are things that belonged to someone else before they belonged to me. I don’t like already-belonged-to things. I want my own things. My puzzles, dresses, sand toys and even my trike are already-belonged-to. I never get anything first. It isn’t just my toys. When Mommy takes us on nature walks, my sister always goes first. I want to run ahead, but the trail is too skinny. Mommy says that I have to walk behind. She says that I can’t walk on the side next to the trail because the animals’ habitat will get broken. I even have to use an already-belonged-to trail! I wish I had my own this-was-mine-first things! Maybe a this-was-mine-first doll house, or a box of sparkly jewels, or an easel with paints. I don’t like sharing paints. There is always blue in the red paint and orange in the green paint. If the paint was mine first, I would be so, so, so, careful. I would make sure that none of the paints would mix. Mommy says that I do get things first on my birthday. Mommy doesn’t understand. She probably never has to have any already-belonged-to things. So, for my birthday, I am definitely asking for new paints. This year, I’m having a jungle birthday party. We’re decorating the house with green balloons and jungle trees. My friends and I are going to run through an elephant sprinkler and have our faces painted like jungle animals. I’m even getting a cake in the shape of a lion. I can’t wait! But, before my jungle party, Mommy says we have an important job. She brings a big box into my room. I want to sit in the box, but Mommy says the box isn’t for playing. It’s for collecting my old toys. She says that since I am going to get new toys for my birthday, I should give away some of my old toys. Give toys away? Why would I do that? Mommy says we’ll give away my old toys to kids who don’t have very many. She says some families can’t afford to buy toys. Or that sometimes their toys get ruined when sad things happen to their homes, like a fire or flood. Mommy says that my already-belonged-to toys will make other kids happy. I think about this for minute. I realize that not all of my already-belonged-to things are so bad. After all, I really like the already-belonged-to swing in our yard. I also love to wear the already-belonged-to princess dress that is too small for my sister. We put my already-belonged-to things into the box. Maybe another little girl will like my already-belonged-to things as much I did when they were mine first. posted by

My story is about forgetfulness and how to retrace our steps to remember where we put things. It was inspired by my son who misplaced a book one day and said to me, "Mommy, my book must have grown legs and ran away!"
"The Book that Grew Legs" By: Sarah Dunwald
A book that grew legs, yes it is true! Yes, it could even happen to you! You see this is how it took place! I know I see the wonder on your face. Let me explain, then you will understand. Maybe then we can come up with a plan. Well it all started one day when I placed my book down. Low and behold it was gone when I turned around. I know I left it there, where could it have gone! It must have grown legs and ran out on the lawn! No, no that could not be. Maybe it grew legs and is jumping through the house like a flea. Oh the adventures my book must be on. I have to find it or my library privileges will be gone! I have looked all over, can you help me now? I hope my book did not grow legs like a cow! My mom is looking and my brother too. My book has legs, what are we to do? We need to look faster and find it soon. My book might be walking on the moon. Where did I last see it, where was it last? I cannot remember it was in the past! My mom says to retrace my steps, go back to the start! I have done this mom, I did my part. Then she remembers one place we did not look. Could this be it; have we found my book? She looks in the garage to see if it is there! I hope it did not grow legs like a bear! I cannot believe it was there! I am in such despair! This whole day has been such a daze! I cannot believe all the places my book went when it grew legs.

I Am So Brave! The ocean so big, so blue, such noise I looked around at all the other girls and boys The sand was safe, so soft and warm I wondered if I should stay here under mommy’s arm But I walked slowly toward where the sea began And felt the chill of my feet in the wet sand As the little waves reached my little toes I felt my worries leave and my excitement grow I begin to laugh at the size of the waves Kicking the ocean water, I feel so brave All by myself, I let the water hit my knees I’ll never again be scared of the beautiful blue seas ------------------------------------------------- ------- A rollercoaster can be a scary thing It zigs and zags and rings and zings I hear the squeals of the kids on the ride I’ve always found myself watching from the side Wondering if I want to give it a try Always letting the chance pass me by I decide I am going to ride that rollercoaster today I will face my fear and ride it away We begin to climb with a click and a clack As we go down, we begin to go so fast I raise my hands up until the ride ends I run to mommy and say, “Can I ride it again?” ------------------------------------------------- ------------ First day of school and I’m not sure I’m ready I make my bed and say goodbye to my teddy I eat my breakfast and put on my shoes I tell mommy, “I have the first day of school blues” She gives me a hug, a kiss and says goodbye I look at my class and give a big sigh The teacher smiles and sings a song I say, “I know that song” and begin to sing along We sing a little more and read some rhymes I make a friend, we count to 10 and then nap time We talk about letters, animals and colors until it’s time to go I sure hope Mommy lets me come back tomorrow posted by

by Lori Bertelli This is Scarlett. She is very smart, like you, and likes to try a lot of different things. On Sunday Scarlett eats stacks of strawberry pancakes and plays with slippery Salamanders. Scarlett visits the library on Monday and locates Missoula, Montana on the map. She also looks up magnificent words in the encyclopedia like “manatee” and “macaw.” Her mother has to remind her to talk quietly in the library. Tuesday Scarlett tiptoes through the tulips while tap dancing to Tiny Tim. She dreams of being a star tap dancer on Broadway one day. On Wednesday Scarlett visits the wading pool and rides the waves with her friend William. They are pretty good at it. Thursday Scarlett and her mother write “Thank You” notes to her friends who attended her third birthday party. Scarlett loves her friends and has fond memories of her party. Friday Scarlett makes new friends at the Fifth Avenue fountains. Scarlett’s mother tells her not to jump into the fountains, but Scarlett slips trying to “test” the water. Good thing she has practiced holding her breath in the bathtub. Saturday Scarlett plays soccer with her team the Shooting Stars. Scarlett scores two points and slurps down a celebratory soda. That night, Scarlett snuggles into her bed and thinks of all the fabulous places she will visit next week: maybe she will ride a skateboard on Sunday and make mud pies on Monday … before she can get to Tuesday, she falls fast asleep. It’s bedtime and I sleep alone! By Simone Kroeger Max had finished washing his face and brushing his teeth. He had put on his favorite dinosaur pajamas and was ready for bed. Max opened up his bedroom door and looked around. He flipped on his night light and climbed under the covers. Max’s mom came in and gave him a kiss, pulling the door halfway closed on her way out. “Good night Max. I love you” she whispered. Max looked up at the ceiling. “Excuse me. It’s my bedtime and I sleep alone!” he said to the ghosts floating up there near his light. The ghosts sighed and disappeared with a pop! Max then looked over at the closet door. “Excuse me. It’s my bedtime and I sleep alone!” he said to the monsters peeking out the door. The monsters cried and disappeared with a boom! Max then leaned over and peered under the bed. “Excuse me. It’s my bedtime and I sleep alone!” he said to the monsters resting in the dark under his bed. The monsters whined and disappeared with a shriek! Max looked around the room and smiled. “It’s my bedtime and I sleep alone!” he said. He looked down at his teddy bear and whispered, “Well almost alone.” posted by

Teacher brings out the play dough. I LOVE play dough and am excited!!! See my excited face? The bell rings for clean-up time. The noise makes me surprised. See my surprised face? We all say our names at circle time. My turn comes and I feel shy. See my shy face? I am playing with the red truck. My friend tries to grab it from me. This makes me mad. See my mad face? Daddy picks me up from school and asks how my day was. I’m thinking hard. See my thinking face? Now it is time to rest. My busy day made me sleepy. See my tired face? Hello, I’m Joshua and I want to share the story of the Pee-Poo fairy
It all started when I got my very own potty.
At first, I wasn’t sure what to do with it,
then, I learned
that when I needed to go
pee or poo,
I should use the potty.
First, I just sat on it and
played with it
like my toys

Then, I used the potty, and decided it was nicer than having a wet diaper

I DID IT and we were SOOOOO happy, we marched around the house and sang the pee-poo song!

This time when I went to bed I found a dime for my piggy bank.
Eventually, I started going to the
bathroom all by myself.
I learned, when I get that funny feeling in my tummy it’s time to use the bathroom.

I could run and play and
besides, I wanted to wear
big kid underwear.
