Kids and Exercise
Sometimes it's hard enough to motivate ourselves to eat right and exercise, let alone encourage our kids to do the same.
What are some ways you encourage your children to turn off the TV, unplug the video games and be active.

Well, in the summertime, K is in the pool every day. No question, she would MUCH rather be in the pool or at the park than sitting in front of the tv. I only hope that this behaviour continues. In the winter time, we introduced her to ice skating and roller skating. Now, that can get expensive over time, so perhaps next year we will get season passes.

But just getting out of the house and doing things with her, that's the best excercise.

I enjoy forcing my teenage son to help me cook dinner. He's been doing it for years. Not only is he learning important life skills and getting a break from the electronics, but he always eats better when it's something he's helped make. That's what we call, win-win-win.

Being a teen, he gets a lot of exercise at school. Lugging his crud from class to class and daily PE. One of the joys of where we live in Davis is that he and his friends can walk almost anywhere in town, and often do. To the teen center, the movies, food... it's all really close.

The next time I do a 5K, I'm thinking of dragging him along. He's actually great about eating healthy and exercise. Sadly I've pushed my love of fast food onto him, but it's something we're both working on. :)

Our goal is to get them outside playing during the day. If it's raining...off to the bounce house place for drop in hours or dancing inside. I take the girls "hiking" at Effie Yeaw at least 2 times a month--they are walking and running and it isn't called "excercise". We also do things as a family...skiing, biking, etc. Setting a good and example and making it part of the family fun time really helps. My 4 year old is also in a gymnastics class which she loves and has really helped build her balance and confidence.

I teach fitness classes and bring my kids! They participate in my StrollerFit classes and "assist" in my restore the core and sculpting classes( the other formats I teach). It's amazing to see them doing walking lunges, jumping jacks, squats...you name it. It's been the best thing I've ever done to show them not only the importance of fitness but also that it can be fun!

Get out there with them!  Play kick back, play catch, go through the obstacle course, jump in the pool TOGETHER!  If you do it, they want to do it, too.  Modeling, modeling, modeling!!!

The best thing I've done is to get my kid out of the house. We take her to the park and being there automatically gets her gears going. Role modeling is important so we are active as well. We show her that there is much to be  enjoyed in riding bikes, hiking, swimming, and going to the gym.
