GAS ANYONE?
Okay - I know it's bad when I slam on my brakes for a gas station that has gas that costs $4.09 a gallon! (South Watt and Fruitridge - by the way)... I WAS looking towards this summer - but to tell the truth - I'm starting to really worry about how I'm going to get through. I pay $35 more a week at my daughter's day care for the summer, dance practice, swim lessons, field trips, weekend trips, etc... (nothing - you see has to do with me of course....) - but I'm starting to get worried about how I'm going to afford these next few months? I started to think about this over the last month and really started bargain shopping for groceries. Grocery Outlet, Walmart and SaveMart have won me over for the time being. Grocery Outlet has just about anything you need including produce. You can't buy any big amount because everything there is "ready to eat" date wise - but it's still seriously cheaper than the other regular stores. There are a few things that they DON'T have (like yeast - I made homemade bread this weekend and I had to go to Save Mart for yeast...) - but you could definitely feed the family on everything they DO have. Additionally, I joined Blockbuster on line for about $15 a month. I figured that will save 1 hour (or more) trips to Blockbuster on Friday only to settle for movies that my daughter talks me into (and I end up binge renting and spend almost $40 to $50 each time! Darn that bargain bin!). I even started looking at light rail and bus schedules and fairs. But between my daughter and myself - I'm still looking at $130 a month on monthly passes - I don't think I'm using quite that much on gas .... YET thank God! So - for all of you that will end up being couch (or yard) potatoes this summer - I feel your pain!!! At least my house will be clean and organized by the time my daughter goes back to school! AND I should be skinny because I plan on using our bikes A LOT this summer when we just want to get out of the house (I finally put on my big booty seat - it's great!). I truly hope everyone has a great summer - and if you can think of anything that helps save pennies - feel free to let me know! 3 comments from 3 users

Well, coupons are always a good thing. If you have the Entertainment book and actaully USE it, you can save a lot. Pre-planning stuff is always good. I just moved to Rancho with the Man and Munchkin, and we can walk to Baskin Robbins on their $1 scoop nights, instead of driving the three blocks it would take to get there. Not only that, but it feels better to walk the ice cream off. Bikes are a good thing, I'm thinking of getting one for the summer and acutally riding to work, but probably won't be riding on the 100 degree days. Ugh. Sigh...this gas thing is not fun. When it goes from $20 to fill your tank to $50 in less than 3 years, something is just wrong. posted by

Good thinking. Getting your movies on-line is a good way to save money.
Have you checked out your car insurance lately? Not to sound like a bad commercial, but I switched a few years ago on eSurance and saved $1,200 a year on our combined car and home. That ads up fast and is a good way to help your budget out a little.
It is really too bad that Sac doesn't have better public transportation. I think you're right about the day-to-day transportation not being THAT much more for you yet. But it is a good option for summer vacation plans. We once took Amtrak to LA rather than fly. I wouldn't do it again, but it was cheaper for sure!
I've been trying to get my gas at Costco as much as possible. They have a gas rebate plan going on right now for members.
