Did you know that scientists routinely use animal tracks and scat (animal poop) to monitor populations? Many of the rarest or most endangered animals are hard to find and tracking combined with scatology is the only way to study them.

By tracking, we enter the secret worlds of animals that humans rarely see. Though some of the best tracking happens in wilderness areas, you don’t need to venture far from home to locate animal signs.

Looking for clues, like print size and shape, trail pattern, stride length, scat, and putting all the data together with a little imagination you can put the puzzle together. Are you tracking them or are they tracking you?!

For biologists and naturalists, every set of track and scat adds to the body of knowledge that helps us understand and manage wildlife.  Through these pieces we can tell how healthy a local ecosystem is.

Scientists, often more interested in learning an animal’s behavior than actually seeing the critter, usually backtrack. That’s because a pursued animal may try to avoid detection by fleeing as quickly and directly as possible. By following a “backtrack,” you get a more accurate picture of the animal’s natural behavior.

Obtaining the skills of a tracker takes time, but it’s something anyone can learn. You can start learning the art of tracking on Saturday, March 14th from 11am to 2pm at Placer Nature Center.

Also open for exploration will be the Nature Center’s Main Exhibit Hall and WaterShed Learning Center, Discovery Lab, Maidu Village, Demonstration Garden and The Nature Shop.
