Life in the Living Room

Do you live in your living room or is it a showroom for furniture you don’t use?  If you’re like many of us, your living room is the place where everyone gathers around to watch TV or play either board or video games.   It’s not your grandparent’s living room with plastic covered chairs and ceramic nick knacks.  It’s a room your family actually “lives” in.  This is what we at IKEA refer to as “The New Living Room”.   Your living room should reflect how you live and help to make your life a little easier.  How do you make it comfortable and accessible while keeping it looking stylish on a budget?  Here are a few tips to help make your living room comfortable and chic while not breaking your bank account!

  • Look for furnishings that serve dual purposes like a sofa bed.  Other items like an ottoman with a removable top provide hidden storage while also supplying additional seating.
  • Maximize the flexibility of your living room by using furnishings that can easily be shifted and reconfigured to allow for different types of use.  For example, if you have a Wii, select furnishings that are modular and can be easily moved and rearranged.
  • Go vertical!  If you’re running out of space and storage, think of buying floating shelves or modular storage that can stack.
  • Buy furniture with removable and washable covers.  Not only are they easy to clean if they get dirty, but it’s easy to change the look of your room with a new slipcover!  Plus, it's cheaper than buying a new chair or sofa!
