Healthy Children from Head to Toe
Healthy Teeth, Healthy Foods, Healthy Bodies

The school year is in full swing and children and families are on the move. The First 5 Yolo Children and Families Commission encourages parents and caregivers to help their children establish healthy eating habits, maintain good dental care and develop physically active lifestyles.

“Learning healthy habits at a young age can reap benefits for a lifetime,” said Julie Gallelo, executive director of First 5 Yolo.

First 5 Yolo provides the following tips for a healthy and happy child:

Tackle Tooth Decay
  • Cavities are the most common dental disease for young kids.
  • The good news is that tooth decay is 100 percent preventable!
  • To help keep teeth clean and strong, never let your baby fall asleep with a bottle.
  • Limit 100 percent juice to two to four ounces a day. Better yet, opt for tap water, which is accessible, inexpensive, does not promote tooth decay and is kind to the environment by reducing bottles in landfills.
  • Help toddlers brush their teeth twice a day.
  • Most importantly, take your kids to a dentist by their first birthday.
  • Remember, healthy smiles make healthy kids!
Choose Healthy Foods
  • In California, one in three children is overweight or at risk of becoming overweight.
  •  As a parent or caregiver, help stop this trend. Start by making sure your child eats at least five servings of fruits and vegetables every day.
  • Choose water over soda and other sugary drinks. One can of soda each day can cause weight gain of 15 pounds per year.
  • Give kids low-fat dairy products like milk, yogurt and cheese.
  • For healthy, affordable recipes, order a free copy of First 5 California’s “Yummy for Your Tummy” mini-cookbook by calling 1-800-KIDS-025.
Move and Groove
  • Healthy kids mean active kids!
  • Walk, bike or run with your kids every day.
  • Play games like “follow the leader” and “hide-and-go-seek.”
  • Turn off the television and computer and encourage your child to go outside to play, skip and jump.
  • By building strong muscles and bones, kids are healthier – and less likely to become overweight or develop diseases like type 2 diabetes.
Keep Baby Healthy
  • A baby is a special gift – who needs special care. As a new parent, make sure you schedule regular well-baby checkups with a health care provider.
