Re: The Best Book I've read lately - Not Parenting Related!
Snowflower and the Secret Fan was wonderful! I loved all the H. Potter books. The Twilight series was very good also. Much better than the movie... My daughter just got done reading the Kitchen Boy. She's on a history kick right now. As for me I've started a new Erica Spindler book. I totally forgot the name of it. LOL
I will have to give Eat,Pray and Love a try...

i just finished reading tallgrass by sandra dallas.
about a young girl dealing with the japanese internment camp that pops up next door to her peaceful little beet farm.
it was good, and at times a little ugly, but it was an easy read.

ok this IS parenting related...but i would recommend "The Five Love Languages of Children"
Its like a quick refresher course on all the positive things we can do for our kids
Its also a little ego boost because we already do a lot of the things they recomend

Like FIELDSE I really enjoyed the Poisonwood Bible. The father was so hard-headed! You could really empathize with the daughters. I gave it to my mom to read but after a couple of years I found out she hadn't read it because she thought it was some weird version of the Bible. LOL
My best friend gave me The Red Tent. Fascinating! A little eyebrow lifting in spots but very interesting.

Two absolutely hilarious books: Bitter is the New Black (about getting laid off) and Pretty Fact (about losing weight). These are memoirs by the brutally honest Jennifer Lancaster. She is quite the character and tells hysterically funny stories about herself. Highly recommend.

I just finished 1984 and it was really amazing. Next book will most probably be "The Picture of Dorian Gray"

I love 1984. If you haven't read Brave New World I would recommend that too. Similar in theme. Dorian Gray is great. If you like it, I recommend The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot, if you haven't read it.
Good stuff!

I just finished Beautiful Boy by David Sheff. Once I started....couldn't put it down. Every parent should read this book. It's a father's story of his son's addiction to meth. It's not a parenting book, but it is about a father/son. Now, I'm reading Tweak..memoir by his son.

I finally finished Eat Pray Love and have to say that it's one of my all-time faves! Elizabeth Gilbert's eloquent prose sent me off to sleep with a smile almost every night. I want to re-read the book and jot down all of my favorite sentences to savor over and over again! Can you tell I'm a word freak?
Aside from the language, just the concept of having the resources, time and freedom to indulge and immerse yourself in exploring your spirituality and re-learning who you are at the deepest level - it's an amazing dream that I would love to live.
