Mothers Who Write

Just want to share with other Sacramento moms a special event coming up (Sat. March 15) by a group of mothers who write. We call ourselves Writing Mamas and are reading our essays on parenting (some are LOL, really!) at Christ Episcopal Church in Sausalito 6 to 9 p.m. Yes, it's kind of far but it's an amazing group of women (I drive all the way from Sacramento twice a month to attend their meetings) and a really fun night out with wine and appetizers to be served. It's meant to provide an escape for moms while supporting the writers in our group. We have best-selling author Sylvia Boorstein (Happiness Is an Inside Job and many other books) talking as well and our theme is Motherhood and Mindfulness. Check out our website in case you're interested in joining the group or creating a chapter here. On the bottom of the home page is more infomation about the event. We're at www.writingmamas.com

Re: Mothers Who Write

Hi!
I have been advised that joining a writers group is very beneficial for honing your writing skills. My personal goal is to someday publish the children's books I have written.

I would love for there to be a local group , although I could probably only make it every other month.

I know that Barnes and Noble on Sunrise used to host (maybe still does?) an Open Mic Poetry night for amateur poets once a month.  Maybe a book store like that would be wiling to host a writer's group?

Thank you for posting this, I will check out that website.

Re: Mothers Who Write

Before joining the Writing Mamas in Corte Madera I had attended several writing groups locally, including at Barnes and Noble. I hate to say how disappointed I was. Everyone was retired or childless or living a life so unlike mine they didn't understand the struggles I faced every time I wanted to write. how does a woman with a child on her lap compose a sentence, a paragraph, a chapter, a book???? When I discovered the Writing Mamas Salon in Corte Madera I knew I had found the perfect writers group for me. Anyway, i do know that chapters are popping up all over the country (there was a magazine article about us and our website is hopping with interest now) -- perhaps it's time we got something going locally. anyway, one thing to keep in mind is that this writers group also includes retreats for mothers, speakers and classes. Our speakers are successful novelists (jackie mitchard, joyce maynard, etc.) who we get to know personally, agents and publishers -- including several who focus on publishing children's literature.  I really hope something like this could bloom in sacramento and perhaps this conversation is the start to making that happen.

I agree with you. I don't have the time (and gas is just WAY too expensive right now) to drive to the Bay Area for a group like this (as great as it sounds!)

I would be very interested in doing something like this locally though.

Re: Mothers Who Write

I would love to do that as well.  I have also written two children's books and have been wanting to illustrate them and get them published.  Getting together with other writers may help me to be more accountable with fulfilling that dream.

Re: Mothers Who Write

Hi all,
I just got a flier (booklet) in the mail about the free Borders classes.
I was so excited about the Writers weekend coming up this weekend at the Fair Oaks Blvd store.  Then I saw the date and realized that I will be out of town.

Is there anyone here that will be going and can tell me about it afterward?

I have several childrens picture-book type stories that I hope to get published someday and I am still trying to figure out whether to go with the publishers route or the self publishing route.

Anyway, write in here or email me through my profile and let me know if you plan to go.

Thanks!
